What should you not do before and after Botox?

Since Botox is a very popular cosmetic treatment, many clients want to have the best outcomes from their treatment and see the most benefits, so there are things to keep in mind to make sure you can mitigate any risks.

Before treatment, you should avoid taking alcohol in the week leading up, especially wine and in particular red wine, as red wine can increase the chance of bruising the face. Avoid anti-inflammatory medications, as they can also increase the chance of bruising. Blood thinners should be avoided, and garlic or foods with garlic should be avoided, as it can also increase the risk of bruising.

After your Botox treatment, you should avoid alcohol in the 48 hours post-treatment; you should not use make-up and skin treatments like facial scrubs in the 24 hours after treatment as this can irritate the injection sites and can risk infection; and exercise should wait until 24 hours after the appointment as the increased blood flow to the face can cause bruising and discomfort. It is also important to note that you should avoid direct sunlight exposure and do not sleep in the treatment area.

Our medical team will go over these in detail both before and after your procedure, as we want you to also see the most benefits possible from your Botox treatment.

What to know about Botox before getting it?

Things to note about Botox before having treatment done are that you should have a consultation before your treatment so they can see your facial symmetry, how the muscles in your face move when doing certain movements, and what your desired outcome will be. Botox is temporary since it paralyzes the specific muscle it’s been injected into. As the Botox wears off, the effects will also begin to fade and this is normal. Bruising post-treatment is normal, but make sure you avoid the recommended things by your practitioner to stop the bruising from becoming worse.

How much time does Botox cosmetic treatment take?

Since you will have had a consultation before your appointment, your injector will go over what was discussed to confirm you still want the same outcome from your Botox. The injection process is quite quick, normally between 15 to 20 minutes, and will be based on the number of injections you will have done.

Clients may experience some minor discomfort during this, akin to a mosquito bite, but most clients report experiencing no pain during the injection process. You may notice some discomfort after the injection process as the Botox begins to work on the muscles, and your injector may recommend you use a cold compress occasionally throughout the day since anti-inflammatory medications must be avoided after your appointment. Most will notice in the week following their injections that the bruising will have faded, and they will see the results of their injections. Since Botox works by freezing the muscles, it will minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

How many Botox injections will I receive?

Since Botox injections are measured by units rather than the number of syringes, the number of injections can vary. These units translate to mL, with 10 units being equal to 0.1 mL, and one syringe will have 50 units of Botox. Most clients will use about 50 units of Botox per treatment, with the maximum safe amount being 100 units in one treatment. These units are not equally spread across the face and will be used to target the desired treatment areas, with some sections needing more than others.

Your injector will be able to give you an idea of the amount of Botox you will need for your desired outcome and approximately how many injections it will take at your consultation appointment, as well as answer any questions you have before your injection appointment.
